My name is Kathy Grinstead.I am from Northern Ohio and live in Columbus, Ohio. I am an Ohio State alumni. I graduated with a B.A. in photography. I have been a wedding photographer for over 10 years. I have been doing small weddings for couples on a budget. I try to capture many parts of a wedding so that the bride and groom will have many images to choose from for prints to share with friends and families.

How did you become a wedding photographer?

I became a wedding photographer soon after I started doing senior portraits in 2005. They knew I had a background in photography. Someone asked me to do their wedding after seeing their brother’s senior portrait that I had taken. I did not have much experience in the beginning but realized that I really liked doing weddings and was good at photographing them. My skills improved by observing other photographers, reading information on wedding photography, and asking people what they liked about my photos.

How would you describe your style?

I look for the special candid moments that a bride and groom do not realize have been captured. The unexpected moments often make the most memorable photographs.

How important is a wedding photographer for your special day?

A wedding photographer is important for your special day for several reasons. First, a bride and groom want images that they can look back on for years to come. Second, The day goes by so fast so you will want someone to be able to capture as many happy and special memories as possible. Also, a wedding photographer is important because they need to trust that the photographer will be on time, be easy to work with and flexible.

Where and how do you find a good wedding photographer?

A good way to find a good wedding photographer is by talking to friends for recommendations, looking at several photographer’s websites to see what you like about their photographs. Also, use social media. Many photographers will have a Facebook page or Instagram page.

How much should a couple expect to pay for a wedding photographer?

It all depends on their budget. I am willing to work with a bride and groom for their budget. As long as it is within reason. There are photographers that will offer low priced packages but I always say do not shop by price. Look for a photographer’s who’s style you really like.

You will want to work with your photographer and decide what is most important to be included with your package. If they are not willing to work with what you need then I move on and keep looking.

They also value a personal touch. I have questions that I ask the bride and groom so that I am sure that I understand what they expect from me on their wedding day.

The focus should be on the bride and groom, guests or the bridal party.

The best places are outside This may be in the area of the venue or a park that is close by. If outside is not possible anywhere inside with a good background and lighting. You want to be able to take photographs with a background that are not cluttered with cars, buildings or other people. The focus should be on the bride and groom, guests or the bridal party. I check out the venue and decide what areas will make the best for photographs.

What was the most memorable wedding you photographed?

The most memorable wedding I have done was an outdoor summer wedding in the country. There were so many wonderful images from the day. There were different parts of the day that worked for the lighting and the mood I wanted to capture. Sunset is always a perfect time to capture romantic and memorable photographs. I was able to take time to spend with the bride and groom and capture fun and creative images.
